Book: Captain America and the Falcon
Issue No.: 221
Published: February 7, 1978
Title: “Cul-De-Sac” (plus “The Coming of Captain Avenger!”)
In the main story in Cap and Falcon no. 221, Captain America fights the Ameridroid. The Ameridroid is, of course, a fifteen-foot-tall android that looks like Captain America, but it has the mind of a Nazi madman. There isn’t much fighting as the Ameridroid is defeated by his own introspection — he takes an honest look at himself and realizes that implanting his consciousness in a fifteen-foot-tall android that looks like Captain America is kind of, you know, ridiculous. No Falcon in this issue, which was mostly set in Newfoundland, so hopefully Falcon will be in the next issue since Cap is back in the States by issue’s end.
Then there’s a backup story where perennial Marvel sidekick Rick Jones (I knew him from the 1980s Saturday morning Hulk cartoon) gets turned into a superhero called Captain Avenger (whose costume is a mix of Iron Man, Captain America, and maybe Thor) and fights Baron Zemo, but it turns out it’s all a dream. Lightweight to say the least, but the art by Steve Leialoha is nice.
